Metal, canvas and acrylic are categories, not complete specifications. Bolot transfers the image by dye-sublimation into prepared aluminium — frameless 21×14 cm, 30×20 cm and 42×30 cm wall formats, each with its own magnetic wall kit. Canvas adds textile texture; acrylic adds a clear face. Compare surface, mount and care. Standard Bolot photo prints are dry-indoor products without UV laminate.

“Metal,” “canvas” and “acrylic” sound like simple choices, but each label covers multiple constructions. A fair comparison starts by asking what the image is printed on or transferred into, what supports it, what the viewer touches, and how the finished object mounts.

What Is Each Print Type?

Metal, canvas and acrylic prints on equal white plinths under matching light, comparing surface texture and finish.

Prepared-aluminium photo print

Bolot transfers the image by dye-sublimation into a prepared aluminium surface. It is frameless and offered in matte or glossy. The visible surface remains exposed, so room light and handling affect how it looks.

Canvas print

Canvas normally uses a printed textile stretched over a support. The weave is visible and can soften very fine detail. Products differ in fabric, ink, coating, stretcher depth, edge treatment and whether an outer frame is included.

Acrylic print

“Acrylic print” may describe a photograph mounted behind a clear acrylic face, a direct print on acrylic or another layered construction. These versions do not share identical colour, weight, scratch behaviour or mounting, so request the supplier's exact build.

How Do the Surfaces Look?

Metal

Glossy metal reflects more light and can emphasise colour and contrast. Matte looks softer and reduces reflections, although some remain. The absence of an outer frame puts more attention on crop, edge and surface.

Canvas

Canvas introduces texture across the image. That may suit painterly portraits, illustrations and scenes where micro-detail is not the main subject. It may be less suitable when tiny typography, architectural lines or fine foliage must remain visually crisp.

Acrylic

A clear acrylic face can create a sense of depth, but it can also mirror windows and point lights. Edge finish, face thickness, backing colour and the image layer all influence the result. Do not assume every acrylic product looks the same.

How Does Canvas Texture Change a Photograph?

Texture is canvas's defining feature. It can give broad areas a tactile, painterly character and reduce the clinical feel of a sharply rendered digital file. The same texture can cross facial detail, text, catchlights and thin lines.

Before choosing canvas, inspect the photograph at the intended size and ask whether texture supports the subject. Also check the stretcher depth, edge crop, corner fold, coating and included hanging method—the front image alone does not describe the finished object.

What Should You Check on an Acrylic Print?

Ask whether the image is mounted behind the face or printed directly, what the backing is, how the edges are finished and which mount is supplied. Request finished dimensions and weight for the exact size rather than transferring a figure from another acrylic product.

Treat scratch, cleaning and impact claims as construction-specific. A clear face may show dust and fingerprints readily, while a coating or hard layer may have its own care instructions. Use only the seller's instructions for that product.

Which Medium Fits the Room and Image?

Choose prepared aluminium when you want a smooth frameless surface and the selected matte or glossy finish suits the room light. Choose canvas when visible texture is part of the creative intent. Choose an acrylic construction when the clear face and layered depth suit the work and you can accommodate its reflections, mounting and care.

For any medium:

  1. measure the available wall and nearby furniture
  2. compare the photograph's aspect ratio with the output crop
  3. view the wall in daylight and artificial light
  4. obtain the exact mounting specification
  5. confirm whether the seller describes indoor, outdoor or other environmental use
  6. compare current complete prices, including frame, mount and delivery

Do not rank the options using unsupported service-life figures or a generic “best value” label. A low quote may exclude framing or mounting; a higher quote may include them. Save each live specification with the price.

How to decide between the three in four steps

1

Start with the room, not the material

Look at the intended wall at the brightest time of day. Strong direct light favours a matte surface; controlled light lets a glossy face show more depth.

2

Match the surface to the photograph

Architecture, text and fine foliage stay crisp on a smooth prepared surface, while canvas weave softens them. Painterly or heavily textured images can gain from that weave.

3

Confirm the mount and the stated environment

Ask each seller which mount is supplied and which environment the product is made for. Bolot's Legacy and Cinematic wall formats each include their own magnetic kit for a compatible dry indoor wall, and the 13×9 cm Keepsake Trio panels are a desk set on their own metal stands.

4

Compare complete, current prices

Configure the same visible dimensions on the same day, including frame, mount and delivery, and record each specification alongside its price.

What Are Bolot's Display and Care Limits?

Standard Bolot Legacy and Cinematic photo prints are for dry indoor display only and do not include a protective UV laminate. Keep them away from prolonged direct sunlight, outdoor exposure, persistent steam, grease and splash zones. Bolot offers no exterior or special-order photo print; for a compatible exterior façade, choose the Address Sign.

For routine care, remove loose dust and use a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, sharp objects, solvents and harsh household cleaners because the visible surface can be scratched.

Format-dependent presentation: The Legacy Print Classic, The Legacy Print Statement and all Cinematic wall formats each include their own magnetic kit for a compatible dry indoor wall. Follow the supplied instructions and hang each print exactly 1 minute after kit installation. The Keepsake Trio instead contains exactly three separate 13×9 cm desk prints and exactly three separate metal stands; it is never a wall format.

Compare the sizes, finishes and supplied mounting of the full metal print range before you settle on a medium.

What Should You Verify Before Ordering?

Upload the highest-resolution original available and review the selected crop, finish and any configurator warning. The preview is a visualisation; the final physical product may differ slightly.

If Bolot proposes a meaningful crop or correction, it waits up to five business days for a reply. Approval means the approved version is used. Without a reply, production follows the original crop submitted with the order—not the unapproved proposal.

The Bottom Line

Metal, canvas and acrylic create different physical objects. Compare exact constructions rather than stereotypes: smooth prepared aluminium, textured stretched canvas or a specified acrylic system. The best choice is the one whose surface, crop, mounting, care and evidenced display conditions fit the photograph and room.

Frequently Asked Questions

The material name alone cannot establish durability. A finished product depends on its print process, coatings, backing or stretcher, mounting, environment and care. Standard Bolot metal photo prints are for indoor display without UV laminate; compare that exact specification with the exact canvas product rather than assuming either one wins.

Prices vary by seller, size, construction, finish, mounting and delivery. Compare current quotes for the same visible dimensions and include the complete finished object. A low canvas price may exclude an outer frame; an acrylic quote may include a backing and mount; a Bolot wall format may include its listed magnetic kit.

Standard Legacy and Cinematic photo prints are for dry indoor display only and have no protective UV laminate. Bolot offers no exterior or special-order version. For a compatible exterior façade, choose the Address Sign, the only exterior-capable Bolot product.

Prepared aluminium and suitable paper-based acrylic constructions can both retain fine detail; canvas weave can visibly soften it. The source file, crop, output size and supplier process are decisive, so no medium guarantees detail from a soft or heavily cropped file.

It depends on the surface. Glossy metal and many acrylic faces reflect strongly. Matte metal reduces reflections but still reflects some light. Canvas texture may scatter reflections, while coatings can change its behaviour. Judge the exact finish in the intended room.
