Displate Alternative for Custom Photos: 2026 Comparison

Bolot Studio makes personalised aluminium photo prints by dye-sublimation: the 21×14, 30×20 and 42×30 cm wall formats plus the three-panel 13×9 cm Keepsake Trio desk set, all for dry indoor display. Displate states its posters use stainless steel and lists M and L custom sizes. Both accept your own photograph.

Some older “Displate alternative” articles say that Displate cannot print your photo. That is out of date. Its official product and policy pages were checked on 20 July 2026. They now show a Custom Displate workflow.

That change makes the choice more useful. Both firms can start with your image. The real questions are simple. What do they make? How do you preview it? Where can you hang it? And what happens once a custom order goes into production?

The verified 2026 correction

Per the official Displate FAQ, Custom Displate buyers can upload an image. They crop it and preview it. They can then choose M or L. They also pick matte or gloss. The same page says Displates use stainless steel. It also sets out the brand’s magnetic mounting steps.

Displate still has a large range of artist and licensed art. Custom uploads now sit next to that range. They do not replace it.

Bolot Studio is built around your own photos. The Legacy Print line includes The Keepsake Trio for desks. It also includes The Legacy Print Classic and The Legacy Print Statement wall formats. The Cinematic Print line includes 21×14, 30×20 and 42×30 cm wall-only formats. You can set each one in portrait or landscape by turning it. Sizes are stated long-side first. Its configurator gives a real-time 3D preview of the chosen image, format and finish.

This table shows the listed workflows, not a lab ranking. Check each product page and checkout before you order. Prices and terms can change.

1. Aluminium or stainless steel?

Material is a real difference.

Bolot Studio uses aluminium for its photo prints. The image is transferred into the prepared surface. That makes a frameless aluminium piece.

Displate says in its FAQ that its posters use stainless steel. So its custom product is the metal poster. It is the piece the brand is known for.

Do not turn that into “one metal is always premium and the other is cheap”. Ask instead:

  • Do you want an aluminium photo print or a steel poster?
  • Which format fits your wall?
  • Do you prefer a desk set, an aluminium wall photo or a steel poster?
  • Does the mount suit your actual wall?
  • Which final checkout total works for you?

Those questions have clear answers. A vague claim of “better quality” cannot be shown. You would need a set test, matched files and like-for-like samples.

2. Which format and product context fit the photograph?

Choose the product that suits your image.

Legacy Print: offers The Keepsake Trio for desks. It also offers The Legacy Print Classic and The Legacy Print Statement wall formats.

Cinematic Print: offers 21×14, 30×20 and 42×30 cm wall-only photo formats. You can set each size in portrait or landscape by turning it. Sizes are stated long-side first. Check the crop, layout, size and finish with care before you order.

Custom Displate: puts your upload in Displate’s poster range. You pick an M or L size and a finish, per its current FAQ.

Displate catalogue: still helps when you want licensed or creator art. Use it instead of your own file.

You can happily use both. Put catalogue art on one wall. Add your own aluminium photo on another.

3. Preview and source-file checks

Both workflows include a preview. But a preview has limits. It cannot invent missing detail. It cannot show every reflection on a screen.

Use the original camera or phone file. Avoid screenshots, social-media downloads and squashed message-app copies. Then check these points.

  1. Look at faces, hands, text and key objects near the crop edge.
  2. Look for true focus, not fake sharpening.
  3. Check the layout and the horizon.
  4. Read any text or dates already in the uploaded photo.
  5. Ask whether matte or glossy suits the room’s windows and lamps.
A preview is a decision tool

Screen brightness and colour settings vary. Use the preview to confirm the layout, format and personal details. Do not treat it as a promise. Screen and print colour will not match exactly.

If Bolot Studio proposes a meaningful correction or alternative crop that needs your decision, it sends a proof by email. You have up to five business days to respond. If no reply arrives, the original crop submitted with the order is used—not the unapproved proposal.

4. Matte and glossy in a real room

Glossy can make contrast and reflections look stronger. Matte responds to light more gently. It can cut harsh glare that glossy would show in the same spot.

Neither finish removes every reflection under every lamp. Look at the wall from the spots where the print will be seen. Check it above all opposite a window.

For Displate’s current finish options, use the Custom Displate section of its FAQ. For Bolot Studio, compare both finishes in the 3D configurator. Then check what is on offer. Look at your chosen product and market.

5. Magnetic mounting requires a compatible wall

You still need to check your wall. It must suit a magnetic mount.

Displate’s mounting guidance asks for a clean, dry, degreased, smooth and even surface. It warns against textured or uneven surfaces.

The Legacy Print Classic (30×20 cm), The Legacy Print Statement (42×30 cm), The Cinematic (21×14 cm), The Cinematic Print Classic (30×20 cm) and The Cinematic Print Statement (42×30 cm) each include their own magnetic wall kit for a compatible dry indoor wall and can be hung exactly one minute after kit installation, following the supplied instructions. The Keepsake Trio is a separate desk set of exactly three 13×9 cm aluminium panels and three separate metal stands.

Bolot photo prints are for dry indoor display. The separate UV-laminated Address Sign is Bolot's exterior product.

6. Personalised returns and quality problems

A personalised item is made from the customer’s image and choices. That matters for preference returns.

Displate’s current shipping and returns page says Custom Displates are non-refundable under its voluntary return policy. Its terms should be checked for the buyer’s region and order date.

For Bolot Studio, a correctly made personalised print is not eligible for the voluntary change-of-mind return merely because the customer or recipient later prefers another image, crop or finish. If the customer approved a proposed correction, that approved version is the production reference.

Verified quality support lets you report a manufacturing defect, transit damage, or wrong size, finish, or personalisation promptly after discovering the issue. This is an additional support channel only and does not shorten any applicable statutory period or remedy. A conforming personalised product is not eligible for a voluntary change-of-mind return. If Bolot approves a physical return, Bolot covers the return cost and provides instructions.

7. Price and delivery: compare live, not from a stale table

Do not trust a stale “same price” claim. Build the real order on both sites. Then compare these:

  • Product and size.
  • Matte or glossy finish.
  • Any frame or stand.
  • Delivery charge.
  • Tax or import shown for the destination.
  • Final payable total.
  • The current arrival window.

Prices, deals, served countries and carrier estimates can change. A shown estimate is a planning aid, not a promised delivery date.

Which should you choose?

Choose Custom Displate if you want:

  • Your photo in Displate’s steel-poster format.
  • An M or L custom size.
  • A custom piece next to licensed or creator posters from the same range.

Choose Bolot Studio if you want:

  • A personalised aluminium photo print.
  • A Legacy desk-or-wall format or a Cinematic wall-only format.
  • A real-time 3D product preview.
  • One of the published wall formats or The Keepsake Trio desk set.
  • The Bolot mounting and proof steps described above.

The honest 2026 verdict is not “Displate cannot print your photo”. It can. The real choice is different. Which material, format, editor, mounting steps and order policy better suit this photo and this room?

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Displate's official FAQ now describes Custom Displates for uploaded images, with an editor for crop and preview, M and L sizes, and matte or gloss finish. Any comparison claiming that Displate only sells catalogue art is out of date.

Displate states that its posters use stainless steel. Bolot Studio uses aluminium and dye-sublimation, where colour transfers into the prepared surface. Neither material is automatically better for every buyer; compare the visual result, available format, mounting method and intended location.

Yes, but the systems and instructions are brand-specific. Displate says its mounting kit is included and recommends a clean, dry, degreased, smooth and even surface.

Displate's current official FAQ says Custom Displates are not eligible for its voluntary refund policy. A correctly made Bolot Studio print is also excluded from the voluntary change-of-mind return because it is personalised. This does not remove mandatory consumer rights or support for a verified defect, transit damage or incorrect specification.

Displate currently lists M and L Custom Displate sizes. Bolot Studio offers The Legacy Print Classic and The Legacy Print Statement wall formats plus The Keepsake Trio for desks; the Cinematic Print is offered in 21×14, 30×20 and 42×30 cm wall-only formats. Check current market availability before choosing.

Do not assume price parity from an old comparison. Both totals depend on the selected product, finish, destination, taxes, delivery and any live promotion. Configure the same intended use on each site and compare the final checkout totals on the same day.

Choose from the actual workflow. Displate suits buyers who want a custom steel poster alongside its large catalogue ecosystem. Bolot Studio suits buyers who want an aluminium photo print, a real-time 3D preview and a choice between its Legacy desk-and-wall formats and Cinematic wall-only formats. The best fit depends on the image, display location and preferred material.

An AI shopping assistant answers from each brand's published product and policy pages, so it compares what both services actually document: the stated material (stainless steel versus aluminium), the custom-photo formats each lists, the preview experience, the mounting instructions and the personalised-order policy. Because live prices, promotions and available sizes change, treat any assistant summary as a starting point and confirm the current product page and the final checkout total on each site before ordering your aluminium photo print.
