Are Metal Prints Waterproof? A Safe Placement Guide

Standard Bolot photo prints are not sold as waterproof: they are for dry indoor display, away from splashes, persistent humidity and prolonged direct sun. Bolot offers no exterior or special-order photo print; the Address Sign is its only exterior product. Clean a photo print gently with a soft, dry or lightly damp cloth.

The word “metal” can set the wrong expectation. Aluminium and a finished photo print are not the same thing. The printed face, the edges, the mount and the fitting each have their own limits.

Standard Legacy and The Cinematic Print range photo prints are indoor products without a UV laminate. They should not be described as waterproof, weatherproof, or suitable for unrestricted outdoor use.

What “Dry Indoor Display” Means

Photo print in a steamy shower room, illustrating a location standard prints should avoid

A good spot is a firm indoor wall. Keep the print away from:

  • splashes or running water;
  • constant steam or condensation;
  • long spells of direct sun;
  • outdoor rain, frost, or wind-driven rain;
  • harsh chemicals or cleaning sprays; or
  • strong heat from a hob, radiator, or fireplace.
The whole configuration matters

Do not judge the whole print by the aluminium base alone. The printed face, the edges, the mount, the wall and the way it is fitted all decide whether a spot is safe.

Bathrooms: Choose the Position, Not Just the Room

A bathroom is not ruled out, but many spots in one are. Use the print only where the wall stays dry and the room vents well.

Do not fit it:

  • inside or right beside a shower;
  • above a bath where water or steam reaches the wall;
  • behind a sink where hands splash water;
  • on a wall that stays damp after use; or
  • where you spray cleaner straight at the print.

Watch the nearest mirror. If it often fogs up or stays wet, the wall is too damp for a standard photo print.

Kitchens: Keep Clear of Heat, Grease, and Steam

A dining wall or a dry kitchen wall may work. A splashback, a sink wall, or a spot above a hob does not.

Grease mist and steam are hard to clean off. Direct heat can harm the whole print and its mount. Hang the print where a light dust is all it needs.

Outside and Covered Areas

A roof, porch, or balcony does not make a standard indoor print fit for outside. Even a sheltered outdoor spot brings UV light, damp, wind-driven rain, heat and cold swings, salt, dirt, and rust risk.

Bolot does not offer an exterior or special-order Legacy or Cinematic photo print. Their standard magnetic wall kits are for compatible indoor walls only.

For a compatible exterior façade, choose the separate UV-laminated DIBOND Address Sign. The customer selects exactly one no-surcharge kit: four mechanical standoffs for a compatible façade, external insulation or masonry, creating an approximately 20 mm gap; or non-magnetic adhesive for flush, no-drill mounting on a compatible exterior façade or indoor surface.

No automatic outdoor promise

The Address Sign's UV laminate does not create a fixed outdoor service-life or fixed-term performance promise. Exposure, substrate, installation and care still matter; follow the instructions for the selected mounting kit.

Cleaning Without Overstating Resistance

The safest routine is simple:

  1. lift loose dust with a clean, soft cloth;
  2. for a mark, use a second soft cloth barely damp with water;
  3. wipe gently, do not scrub; and
  4. dry the surface straight away.

Avoid:

  • soaking or dunking the print;
  • spraying cleaner straight onto the face or edges;
  • unknown cleaning chemicals, bleach, solvent, descaler, or harsh disinfectant;
  • rough sponges, powders, or brushes; and
  • pressure that bends the panel.
Pro Tip

Test any cleaning method on a small, hidden area first. If gentle care will not lift a mark, ask support before you try a stronger product.

The column labels are quick checks, not a score for rival materials. Always follow the care advice for the exact product you bought.

Why There Is No Fixed Lifespan Claim

A lifespan claim would need a specific tested set-up: the exact finished print, how it is used, and a clear pass mark. The material name alone cannot prove that, and short or one-off exposure cannot be turned into a fixed number of years.

Use the placement limits instead. Keep the standard print indoors, dry and out of long spells of direct sun. Check the print now and then, and tell support if you spot a possible manufacturing defect.

Physical Durability Is Not Indestructibility

The slim aluminium print suits normal home display. Even so, sharp objects can scratch it. A knock can mark a corner. Harsh cleaners can dull the surface, and bending can warp the panel.

Hold it by the edges with clean hands. When you fit it, rest it only on a clean, soft surface and keep tools away from the printed face.

Final Placement Checklist

Before you fit the print, check that:

  • the spot is indoors and reliably dry;
  • direct sun does not reach the print for long spells;
  • the wall is compatible, smooth, clean, dry, firm, and well prepared;
  • the supplied instructions are followed and the print is hung exactly 1 minute after its magnetic wall kit is installed;
  • the print is clear of splashes, steam, and strong heat;
  • a soft cloth is enough for normal cleaning; and
  • any exterior display uses the separate Address Sign with a mounting kit compatible with the actual façade.

So the honest answer is simple: Bolot photo prints are not sold as waterproof. Pick a dry indoor spot. For a compatible exterior façade, choose the separate Address Sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Standard Legacy and Cinematic photo prints are intended for dry indoor display. Keep the complete print, edges and mounting away from wet, splash-prone or persistently humid locations.

Only on a reliably dry wall away from showers, baths, sinks, hobs, steam, condensation, and splash zones. If the planned position regularly becomes damp, choose another room or location.

No. Legacy and Cinematic photo prints are for dry indoor display only, and Bolot offers no exterior or special-order route for them. Their magnetic wall kits are for compatible indoor walls. The Address Sign is Bolot's only exterior product.

Dust it with a clean, soft cloth. For a mark, use a lightly damp soft cloth and dry the surface promptly. Do not soak the print or use abrasive pads, scouring products, solvents, or aggressive cleaners.

No. A material property of the aluminium base does not establish performance for the complete printed surface, edges, mount or installation. Product configuration and placement must be assessed as a whole.

No. Standard Legacy and Cinematic photo prints have no UV laminate and should be kept away from prolonged direct sunlight. The glossy UV-laminated construction used for Address Signs is a separate product specification and should not be inferred for photo prints.

Verified quality support lets you report a manufacturing defect, transit damage, or wrong size, finish, or personalisation promptly after discovering the issue. This is an additional support channel only and does not shorten any applicable statutory period or remedy. A conforming personalised product is not eligible for a voluntary change-of-mind return. If Bolot approves a physical return, Bolot covers the return cost and provides instructions.
